Taffetas:
A Musical Journey Through the '50s
By Kim Adams

"Taffetas" is the perfect show for this economic time according to Tom Briggs, executive director of Thalian Association, "In these troubled days we live in, it is nice to sit back and let the music flow over you -- no big lesson -- no morals to worry about, just an evening of fun."

Produced by Thalian Association and directed and choreographed by David T. Loudermilk, a graduate of Catawba College in Salisbury, NC, the show brings to mind a nostalgia fabric worn mostly by women in the ‘50s. It breathes life, movement and fun around the 1950s pop charts "when life was happy, peaceful and whimsical" said Mr. Loudermilk who also directed "A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine" which was voted one of the five top plays of 2009 by StarNews.

The original production by Rick Lewis encompasses the life of a singing group of four sisters from Muncie, Indiana, making their national television debut on "Spotlight on Music," a factious variety show similar to the iconic Ed Sullivan show. While the entire family will love this swaying musical, it’s the parents, grandparents and those who remember who days that will especially get a kick out of this production.

Paying tribute sounds of The McGuire Sisters, The Fontane Sisters and The Chordettes and other girl groups of the era, the show will no doubt leave the audience crooning such tunes as "Where the Boys Are" "Mr. Sandman" and many other period favorites.

"Taffetas" will be presented at the Hannah Block 2nd Street Stage, 120 S. 2nd Street. Opening night is Thursday, February 4 and runs through Sunday, February 14. Curtains are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.
